ACLES was created, among other things, to:
- Promote learning and teaching of modern languages in the field of Higher Education.
- Promote the standardisation of language proficiency levels and the assessment systems of such levels, in compliance with the guidelines issued by the Council of Europe.
- Promote the creation and development of Modern Languages Centres in Higher Education.
- To provide opportunities for high quality language learning to students who are not specialised in degrees of linguistic nature and to university staff.
- To fulfil the objectives in the teaching and learning of modern languages and multilingualism promotion as indicated by the relevant agencies at European level.
- To represent their local, national and international members.
ACLES and CercleS
Acles is part of CercleS (European Confederation of Language Centres in Higher Education), a confederation of independent associations of language teaching centres that was established in Strasbourg in 1991 and which currently includes 22 European countries.
CercleS gathers around 290 Centres, Departments, Institutes, Faculties or Higher Education Schools, whose main responsibility is language teaching. It has several thousand academic, administrative and technical personnel members, and around 250,000 students learn languages in its centres. CercleS is committed to the highest standards in language teaching and research.
